10th Mountain Huts

So I'm thinking about putting a short two night hut trip together with a couple of friends. Has anybody been to any of the 10th mtn. huts? I'm looking for something that isn't too far of an approach (say, sub 5 miles) but still might have some potential for some good lines and/or good spots for a jump.

Any ideas?

The Shrine Mountain Inn on Vail Pass is an easy two miles in. From there you have pretty easy access to the black lakes ridge, which is a great cliff/BC booter zone, although it definitely needs more snow at this point.

I've also heard that the Fowler-Hilliard hut has great skiing right out the door, but I've never been there.

Personally I would suggest against the huts closer to Leadville because I don't think that area generally gets as much snow.

As you probably know, the biggest problem you are going to have with the 10th mountain huts is that they are super popular and in general weekends book out months in advance.

I would also recommend checking some of the other huts and yurts which are not part of the 10th mtn div system located farther south in Colorado. For two reasons: 1) they don't book out as many months in advance. 2) There is actually snow in Southern Colorado at the moment.

Hope that helps!

i've been to Vance's Cabin, Skinner hut, Jackal hut, and Janet's cabin

They're all pretty rad huts, hit me up if you want info on any of those

eiseman hut has by far the best skiing of any of the 10th mountain huts. which also means its always packed with people and hard to get spots unless you book months in advance

For a 1st trip shrine mountain inn is the best. Running water, heated interior, beds, refrigerator, legit indoor bathroom! Pretty much a house. Good skiing nearby too. The skin up is also only 2.7 miles so not bad at all.

Shrine is a super easy hut to get to and has some decent skiing around. Janets is a bit longer of an approach but has some great low angle bowls around. Section house is a long approache and the ski is decent. there is a really sick long 25-30 degree glade that goes maybe 2 miles down

Yo JIBspy, any more details you can share about skiing around Section House? Might be headed up there next weekend...

Pretty much all of the skiing at section house is gonna be in glades. Everything above treeline gets blown away for the most part. Also bring earplugs up there that hut is one of the loudest sounds like its going to fall over constantly because of the wind. There is a fun glade you pass through on the last half mile to mile of the approach to the hut. there is also a fun looking east facing slope directly across from the sections house. Also try to get all of your using the bathroom done before bed because the toilet is outside and it is always windy as fuck up there. There was a decent shallow and wide chute more of a dip really that seem to keep its snow. the only time i was up there was february last year when we had ass loads of snow so i cant vouche for the skiable zones but i am thinkin the glade and the east facing slope should be skiable.
