04/05 repeat?

so, you guys remember the winter of 04/05? I was in Fernie for that winter and it went a little something like this: preseason was good, average to slightly above average. december/early january was average or so.
mid january the pineapple express came through and we got rain. the same storm made it rain to around 3000m for most of southern BC. after the rain event it was warm (sat around the freezing mark or slightly above) for what, 6 weeks? in February we were downloading the timber chair due to lack of snow. Other than the coast getting hammered with snow in mid to late april the winter of 04/05 was as close to a write off we have seen in recent history.

Now... go for a ski, tell me what the conditions are like, look at the forecast for the rest of January, and please, please tell me I'm going crazy. I hate to be the negative dude who hates, but it's getting depressing here in Rossland. we're at least a meter shy of our normal base, the snow is getting beyond firm, there's no snow in the foreseeable future... and yea, and the avalanche conditions are all, well... fucked.

If you have something to sacrifice to Ullar, I think now is the time.

I guess this thread's purpose is to discuss repeated weather patterns and seeing if there's a trend. If you wanna hate on me for talking negatively about the current skiing conditions, please don't. There's nothing I hate more than people getting mad at me for talking about the weather if the forecast is calling for less than ideal weather. It doesn't matter if we talk about the weather or not, it's going to do it's own thing. we have no control over it, so get over yourself.

I too remember that year. But it is too late to cry 04/05. The Colombias got snow out of the system that brought rain to the south Kootenays. The rainstorm that came is nothing like the great rain of 04/05, which decimated the base of fernie to where there was dirt underneath the elk chair. Also the high pressure system we got was warmer than what we are getting. Later in the week it is going to get colder. Don't look at the 14 day trend that the weather network forecasts . In my experience it is always misleading, wrong and causes panic. Just watch environment canada and in two weeks everything will be fine. Golden had lots of good snow last saturday. And the south will get another January storm cycle soon.

Yeah I remember that season, hopefully this season isn't a repeat. Still, this season has been really good to Vernon so far, 185 base is pretty dec. for around eary-mid jan, and we've had more snow in town than we've had in a few years. Not stoked on the forecast though.

ah yes, they closed down kicking horse that year during christmas due to fuez bowl sliding onto the cat track. but apparently, its good conditions up at the horse after this huge dump, you just dont need to layer up much at all. forcast calls for golden to be -1 as a high. hopefully it gets colder

argh the weather forcast changed since i posted those links! ARGH. but if a 4cast can change that quick for the worse, surely it can change that quick and say snow snow snow and -20!?

was watching the news weather on wednesday night and it was crazy to see the jet stream... shoots straight north just off the coast up to the yukon, bends almost a complete 180 and drops back down just east of the rockies... so the whole province is sitting in this pocket of warm while everywhere east of canada is getting stupid cold.
There was snow in the forecast for Rossland on Friday - but sadly that went the way of the dodo bird and now we're back to a 14 day trend of sun.
How is Big White's halfpipe right now? 'cause I'm running out of ideas here.

Sun Peaks was 5 today, so warm, had to take off layers and gloves. The park was amazing but the rest of the mountain is slushy and like spring skiing

anybody get any significant snowfall yet? we're very close to three weeks with no new snow since the rain event here in rossland.
