So I'm building a ski for a school project and this might be a dumb question but are binding inserts really necessary? I forgot to order them but im not sure if I even need them.

So I have last year's drop kick boot, but the top buckle won't tighten. The replacement buckles on full tilts site (I'm looking at the aluminum or the basic top buckle) say they only fit the original and soul shells, so I'm not sure if they can work on the drop kick shell. Will it?
