Stuck in Sydney AUS with no gear, WTB some cheap alpine skis and boots.. I'm ~a mens 10.5 (28.5cm). Skis don't matter much at all... almost anything will do!

I'm in Sydney australia for a semester and want to go skiing.. any recommendations? Some friends want to go to Thredbo, but it looks expensive and crowded and not all that great... I was dumb enough to not bring my ski boots or skis, so I'll also need to pick up some used gear/rent some.. any tips?
