Lagers are traditional fermented at cold temps because lager yeast creates some estery off flavors at higher temps. but you don't have to ferment them cold, anchor steam beer is made this way.

dark brews are more forgiving for first timers. not great for pong, but the stronger flavours will cover up your mistakes. anyone up for a brewers cult? just a place to throw recipes and ask for help. not sure if there are a lot of homebrewers on NS, but if there's 10 or so it might be worth it.

should work at that temp. depends on humidity though.

try other brews in the "brown ale" category. pale ales and ESB are generally low in hops. also Belgian or German wheat beer like hefeweizen might be good for him.
