Just follow the direction on the bottle and throw it in the wash. If you're just doing a single item, then doing it by hand shouldn't be too hard. Applying it undiluted or other than the directions on the bottle will just be a waste.

I agree about the random chips showing to the wood core. It mostly happened after a bad crash but they still hold up pretty well. Like the previous poster said...a little epoxy on bad chips will prevent the core from getting wet.
