The 189s are much better for big mtn shearly due to their size, the 179s are a good all round ski. Both can still lay a nice arc down on the groomer. Flex wise, they're fairly soft, but that allows em to float in the pow, like the seth pistols they're stiff underfoot and soft in tip and tail...

My buddy came across a pair of test skis by line last season that tried to integrate this idea. The problem was that the base wanted to delam at the interface with the plate, so did the edges.
