I've done plenty of rails and as long as you keep your bases flat on the rail it doesn't do to much damage. Its usually just scratches in the wax, not to deep, and dulled edges, which can be sharpened. Also, check for burs or cracks in the rail, they can catch an edge and possible rip it out...
