hydrolics are not neccessisarliy(i fucked up that spelling) more reliable, it depends on what mechanical(normal disc) you comparing to what hydrolic. The avid 5 and 7 bearing mechanicals preform better then some hydrolics, as for frame size i would go with a medium, but you should check them out...
