that's right. if you try to to tele on an AT rig you'l die, or at least look like an idiot. I do alpine turns on my tele gear very easily, you just have alittle less control.

has anybody tried the Fischer T-Stix(telemark)?

get some old alpine skis and put cheep telebindings on them, and buy some used boots. not a great rig but it works for learning
