Sick TR, can't wait to hit up the local mountain. Shame there isn't enough snow, the one weekend so far this season it has had enough snow, I wasn't able to go and now it's all gone. Hopefully will get some more before the end of the year, not sure I can last without snow until the new year.

Yep I 'm the same, dropped mine on concrete (the road) once and put a large dent in the side and it still works fine (have it in a solid clear plastic case now though). Only problem with it has been the headphone jack which has given out twice (just get it replaced by a friend).

Nikon is a little bit more user friendly than Canon. Also if you like the D40 I would be inclined to say to continue to look at Nikon over Canon. Try any camera before you buy it so you know if you like how it feels or not - not going to be great if you don't like using it. Nikon wise look at...

Good study and analysis. Currently in the process of writing my honours dissertation now (20,000 words :/) and it is a big undertaking that should be appreciated, respect. Hopefully it will be published so more people can read it and perhaps make use of it in the wider world.

Yep... There are plenty of options out their but you are going to have to leave some money to get a good quality lens - like the 17-85. Here is a review of the budget DSLR's on the market atm compared to each other. Of course there are still other options so go into a shop and try the cameras...
