dude if your mom has nikon lenses then the choice is obvious (at least for me it would be). Lenses can get mad expansive, so save yourself some money and get a Nikon. But I'd suggest something better than a D40. Maybe at least a D40x or D60

yea I've heard great things about the 50 1.8..... I would just rather get a zoom lens. I think I might go for the Sigma 24-60. I know its not the best, but I'm just getting started so I dont need incredible quality pictures or lenses yet.
