Lecht Friday 31st October

With the

temperatures going down and snow falling on the mountains today,it

looks like winter has returned. During the day the snow showers will

turn to snow at lower levels. Snow showers will fall at low levels on friday and saturday with the temps staying below freezing in the valleys.

The northerly flow is a bit unpredictable exactly where the most snow

will hit,but on slopes exposed to the north will be favoured and

blizzard conditions will set in.

Even if enough snow fell during friday and saturday, the wind and

drifting looks likely to put paid to any hope of uplift this weekend,

unless glenshee or the lecht get enough by saturday and the higher FL

on sunday cure any road problems, but it is still looking wild on

sunday. Lots of if's and buts there.

The general trend of the outlook is cold or cool through the five day

summary forecast period, but there is something interesting going on

overnight Saturday into Sunday.

During the early hours of Sunday morning a warm sector is projected to

cross the mountains, occluding as it does. The exact timing of the

occlusion closing relative to where the front is overhead will

determine whether an area gets a period of very wet snow or a brief

period of rain away from the highest tops with the FL nudging above the

tops. As this happens the wind will swing SW'ly, and if this is blowing

wet snow down slope then it's potentially a good base building scenario.
