It was common medieval practice after the eleventh century to refer to any figure as a color (often by analogy to the verb coloro), and a sometimes useful distinction between colores grammatici and colores rhetoricae was honored more in the breach than in the observance. By the fourth century more than two hundred figures were available in rhetorical treatises. But even in Cicero's lifetime, as he remarks in De oratore (III.lii.200), there were available: et verba et sententiae paene innumerabilis. Quintilian felt it necessary to point out that there are not really Abercrombie Fitch Outlet as many figures as some people claim; see his warning in Institutio XI.i.22-25, and his other remarks in IX.ii.19-25 on the figure dubitatio. For a more detailed discussion see below, Chapter Four, pp. 184-91. 39 Ab usitata verborum potestate recedatur atque in aliam rationem cum quadam venustate oratio conferatur. ad Herennium IV.xxxi.42. 40 For convenience this list employs Caplan's translation of terms. Latin terms (as used in ad Herennium) are placed first, then English terms in parentheses. It is indicative of the problem of terminology that many of the "English" terms are Greek in origin. 41 For full definitions see Appendix, pp. 365-74. There are two methods of permutation: changing the words but not the sense, and changing both the words and the sense. The master or teacher has two primary duties: to note the vices in (student) verse, and to offer remedies for these vices. The student, on the other hand, has three duties: the admission of faults, the removal of written faults, and avoidance of future faults. Methods of conclusion arc as varied Abercrombie T Shirts as their authors. Some methods used by the ancients are recapitulation, petition for favor, apology for the work, pleas for glory, presentation of thanks, praise of God, and abrupt ending. Matthew of Vendome's Ars versificatoria, as this summary shows, is something like Horace's Ars poetica in that it ray bans sunglasses sale rather loosely organizes bits ray ban sunglasses of advice to verse-makers. Matthew assumes a great deal of prior knowledge. He calls upon students to try to understand the general principles behind his examples, lest they be misled into mistaking the intentions of bikini swimwear the authors they read.71 It is interesting to note that Matthew customarily refers to his "hearers" (auditores) rather than "readers." This may mean that what we have here are published lectures, or that Matthew is merely using a convention of his time to indicate that verse is to be heard, not read. In any case the book is clearly a grammar master's reflections on some aspects of composing verse. Horace and Ovid are his favorite exemplars. His final section on how to correct a student's verse-writing is another indication of his pedagogical concerns. With all its classical allusion and classroom lore, however, the Ars versificatoria remains a rather generalized treatment of the subject. It may tell us more about the twelfth century than it tells us about verse-writing. It tells us that twelfth-century grammar masters were interested 71 Amplius auditoris intelligentia fideli memoriae studeat commendare, sinful swimwear ut in praedictis descriptionibus per specialia nomina generalem intelligent disciplinam, ne diversum a mente scriptoris et sibi domesticum praesumat habere intellectum.
