In the same weekend that someone

with a name as unglamorous as Leanne Mitchell won The Voice, someone with a

name like a popstar won The Apprentice (BBC One, Sunday). At the start of the

series, Ricky Martin didn’t stand out at all – he seemed a little quieter and a

little blander than the swaggering wide-boy types and painfully shrill women

who always get fired first – but in the last few weeks he excelled,

particularly when sent out on his own to strike deals (and eat scallops). Since

The Apprentice is now about Lord Sugar finding a business partner, rather than

an employee, Ricky was clearly seen as a safe pair of hands.supra

In previous series, The Apprentice

final would see all of the fired candidates being brought back to complete one

last task, but this has now been scrapped in favour of something a little more

intense. The four remaining candidates (Ricky, plus Tom Gearing, Nick Holzherr

and Jade Nash) were aggressively interrogated about their business plans by

Lord Sugar’s panel of experts, which, despite the stern faces and impossible

questions, allowed us finally to see a sillier side to 26-year-old recruitment

consultant Ricky. He admitted, for instance, that he calls himself Ricky, and

not Richard, so that people remember him (that’s it, I’m changing my name to

Britney Spears). We also learned that in his application form he wrote that he

saw himself as Thor, in relation to Lord Sugar’s “godfather” (yes, he studied

biochemistry, not ancient mythology).supra

All in all, Ricky was a much more

ridiculous person than Tom, the likeable 23 year-old whom he narrowly beat in

the final. But he was a ridiculous person with a sensible business plan. And

while I’m disappointed that Sugar plumped for Ricky’s boring recruitment

consultancy for people with technical and scientific skills over Tom’s more

exciting but risky hedge fund with a twist (the twist being, the liquidity here

is fine wine), it doesn’t really matter, since the entertainment part is over

and we’ll probably never hear of either of them again.Cheap
