Welcome to the Protographer's Handbook, it's all you ever need to know about ski photography.

As Tall T Dan knows, you always need to have a fresh kit and with every photographer's kit, there must be a camera.

For years members have been flooding to Jamie Walters' thread here on Newschoolers when trying to answer the what camera question. That thread has been going strong since 2010, however, I want to expand on his thread with more detail and examples for our ski photographers and want-to-be ski photographers out there.

To recap Jamie's thread, keep these in mind:

1) Your Budget

2) Your Experience with Cameras/Photography

3) Gear You May Already Have, If Any

As well as these settings:

1) Autofocus Points

2) Frames Per Second of High-Speed Continuous Shooting

3) Tracking Capabilities

With the above in mind, I have broken cameras into four categories by price. All of these prices are in USD. In my examples I only use Canon and Sony, as they seem to be the best contenders. Nikon arguably seems to be a dying brand, while Olympus and Fuji are more fit for cinematographers.

With out further ado...

If you are just starting out and looking to pick up a camera, the Canon T4i or the Sony a6000 are right for you. Both of these cameras are later models, yet boast enough power to get the job done. My first camera was a much later model Canon T2i, which you may be able to find for very cheap used. Both of these cameras are a great starter camera, however the specs on the Sony are insane for the price tag. The Canon has a 18.0 MP sensor, 9 AF points, and 5fps continuous, while the Sony boasts a remarkable 24.0 MP sensor, 25 AF points, and 11fps continuous. It may seem obvious to go with the Sony, however, many photographers like myself, like the feel of and operation of a standard DSLR.
