As pride comes to a close...kjdgfkhgbdf

Pride events have always had some backlash. The idea that skiing is

Two common themes

"Don't shove your politics down my throat I'm here to ski!" and "The mountains have always been accepting of everyone.

In a sense you can see it. We head up to the mountains to chase a common dream, the perfect pow turn, or just a great day lapping groomers with good friends. Compared to other sports it feels like a small community and most friend groups much tighter still.

As far as politics, I can get that. Hobbies like skiing can be a place for people to get away from their work week. I don't understand how the trigger to meltdown on social media is simply any post a ski area makes about pride. It's fairly

disproportionate. People tend to come out on social media to complain about business in general for all kind of varying things. Some of them valid, some of them not so much. The thing is, every year, there's something about pride, there's something about rainbows, there's something about queer people. It bring out the worst in people fast.

The crowd that says that nobody cares

An Outsports article from 2017 reflected the same themes. Most of the comments are positive, but the minority is loud and combative. They see anything about pride or coming out as an attack. At the same time, people who are queer need roll models too.

If people have an issue with a ski area that's fine. It happens but pride

I'm no expert. I'm not a spokesperson on skiing or the ski industry. All I know is what I've seen and hear over the years. Things have gotten a lot better and that's great, but this weir backlash is somewhat disconcerting. Sure sometimes on social media it's more troll accounts run by assholes. But a lot of times it's real people. And that's a shame. The people saying "Why have pride? Nobody cares!!" Make it obvious that it's still necessary. There are groups of queer people alll over that have been organizing events and getting people into skiing, surfing, skating, even doing touring. It's good to see. Sure sometimes the mountains our crowded but I'd be down for some of the people that say they aren't coming back, are unfollowing a mountains socials, to actually leave. Leave some space for people who want to come mingle and get a taste of the mountains and what has in se sense become our lives

Skiing never was an open place. Maybe a place that assholes didn't have to think about things, but it wasn't ever all fun and games. Especially in the terrain park world. Then you get into the actual industry. The racist and homophobic shit you can here in a shop yard to this day is impressive. People that say it doesn't matter are either very very out of touch, or far more likely a little homophobic at the very least.
