When looking through a popular ski magazine such as Freeskier you may look at the photos section and ask yourself: how the hell do they get such clean shots?
Well to tell you the truth I don’t have an answer either. However I do know a few useful tips that can make your shots look cleaner in no time.
And before you go through this know that I am not a professional so I am sure there are many other techniques to help you edit your pictures.
Here is a raw image that I got a few days ago right off the camera:

Right click and save this photo.
Now open photoshop. Then click File - Browse - locate this picture and open it.
The first thing to do is adjust the color and lighting. Go to Image - Adjustments - color/contrast/brightness and adjust as you see fit.
The second step is to select the skier using the polygonal lasso tool. Zoom in to about 300% and make sure you are being very precise with your mouse clicking.

Once the skier is selected right click on the selection and press "layer via copy" this will make the skier a new layer ontop of the background layer
Once you have the new layer, go to the layers window and right click on the new layer - then click blending options - a new window will come - click "outer glow" this will make the skier stand out from the background a little more. Adjust the settings as you see fit.

Now see how it is hard to see the difference between the box and the snow in the raw photo? Well that is an easy fix. Select the box surface, again using the polygonal lasso.

Once the box is selected go to Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Levels...

Now that the Levels window has come up make the box darker using the slider tool in the Levels window. This will make the box much more visible.

Now this image looks great, right? WRONG! What about those gapers that are always getting in your way? Well you can fix that problem with photoshop too. Just select the Smudge Tool, zoom in to about 300% on the gaper and wipe snow over the lower half of the gapers body.

Now select a box the width and height of the gaper over his head. This box should be selecting the trees and branches over the gapers head.

Finally right click on the selected box and click layer via copy. Then drag this new layer over the upper portion of the gaper. Use the eraser tool to erase excess trees and branches that overlap the snow.
Repeat this step for the other two people in the picture.
Here is my final version of this picture. Lets see what you all can do. I am sure a ton of people can out-photoshop me.
