With AnthonyHopkins, Colin O'Donoghue. A young priest helps anelderly exorcist inRome. Director: Mikael Håfström (1:53).PG-13: Horror, violence. At area theaters.Anthony Hopkins ishaving the strangest retirement since BrettFavre.

Not long ago, the Oscar-winning Welsh actor announced he'd be easingout of movies. Then he was quoted as saying he was trying to retire, except"his agent keeps coming up with a script."

Would those be the scripts for "The Wolfman"and, now, "The Rite"? (We'll give him a pass for WoodyAllen's "You Will Meet a Tall DarkStranger," though he'll next play Odin in "Thor.")

Not that a tale of modern-day exorcisms is necessarily in a genre alien to SirAnthony — his first turn as HannibalLecter got him anOscar, and his next two were as gruesome as they were needless. Yet "TheRite" is also terminally silly, even more so for being "inspired byactual events."
