Niseko Replaces Legendary Quad Lift with New Gondola This Winter

Niseko, Japan's most famous modern ski resort, is gearing up for a significant upgrade that will enhance the experience for skiers and riders in the upcoming 2024-25 winter season. The installation of a new state-of-the-art gondola in the Grand Hirafu sector marks another step in Niseko's ongoing evolution as a world-class winter sports destination.

The new Hirafu gondola, set to become Niseko's third in the Grand Hirafu area, will replace the aging Ace Quad Lift #2 Center 4, which has faithfully served visitors since 1985. This ultra-modern 10-person gondola promises to revolutionize access to some of Niseko's best terrain from the top of the popular Ace Family run.

With a running speed of 6 meters per second - 1.5 times faster than its predecessor - and the capacity to transport 2,800 people per hour (up from 1,800), the new gondola will significantly reduce wait times and improve the overall flow of skiers and riders on the mountain. This upgrade aligns with Niseko's reputation for having the most frequent lift improvements among Japanese ski resorts over the past two decades.

The decision to replace the old quad lift wasn't taken lightly. A farewell ceremony was held at the end of the season, celebrating the countless memories made during its nearly four-decade service. In a touching tribute, the resort auctioned off the old lift chairs, with some fetching up to 150,000 yen (approximately £750) each - a testament to the emotional connection many visitors and locals have with the resort.
