Cornice cutting has

been a standard, techniques among ski patrollers and mountain guides for

decades. Cornice cutting is a good way to test the satiability of the snow pack

and should never be attempted by an unexpressed individual.

Find a small car

sized cornice that weighs significantly more than a person.

The smaller the cornice

is, the less effective the test will be. The bigger the cornice the more

effective the test is. When cutting cornices always set-up a belay rope, especially

on slopes with bad consequences.

You should

practice cornice cutting on a safe slope until you get the techniques worked

out. Always remember to make sure the area below you is clear, before you do C.C.

--- THIS IS VERY INPORTANT.

When Cutting cornices

you need at least two people for it to be more effective. Grab an end each and

throw the cord over the edge of the cornice or push it over with a ski pole, avalanche

probe. Now what you do is. Both pull the cord back up toward the cornice slowly

at the same time and start off with a slow sawing motion and gragly cutting faster,

until the cornice collapses.
