In theory you have good intentions. But regardless of what policies are changed and how much money is pledged to Africa, it is rare that results are produced. Very rare.

As well, think of the possibilities of space exploration in the future, and how that could influence the human race. It's a closed-minded line of thinking to say that all space exploration should be scrapped.

Its close minded thinking to think that money spent on earth to better ourselves have rarely produced anything useful.

Its because the right people aren't behind that money. If NASA smart guys had that money with the intention to make inventions to help us out on this planet, im sure shit would get done.

Stephen hawkings said in his last presentation that we need to find a new planet soon because we've already damaged earth beyond repair, and I'm certain that he has a better grasp on the issue than you so I'm betting on space being the place

we do need to develop space exploration for the possibilities, we also need to develop a fix for the earth. the two do not need to be mutually exclusive. lots of money gets wasted every hour on needless wars, on putting money into bank accounts of the super rich, on making inorganic fertilizers to ruin family farming for all time.

lots of problems in the world, space travel needs to be less damaging to the atmosphere while thrusting off of earth, the development a magnetic drive to do this will be a gift for all of humanity.

This is a terrible discussion. The third/developing world is developing faster right now than ever before. The total world economy is booming faster than any point in history. Growth now exceeds even that of the industrial revolution. This is due to corporate money flowing into developing nations in exchange for primarily labour. Some protectionists and xenophobes believe this to be a bad thing but the fact is, economics is not zero sum. The amount of monetary reserves held by these nations now exceeds that of developed nations. This results in the stable low interest rates and low rates of inflation that western companies enjoy (and indirectly, you also enjoy). Throwing money at some of these nations can be a waste due to horrible inefficiencies and corruption within their governments and regimes. Although due to the social sphere in Africa, it is hard to do anything else, they are also benefiting from the current state of globalization albeit to a lesser degree than say China, India, Russia or Brazil.

The amount of money spent on some space projects can seem excessive and at some times, wasteful. But really is nothing compared to the funds necessary for a global or even national reform. This money flows naturally due to the developed world's capitalist nature and results in a greater good for everyone. There are some neigh Sayers for globalization but current numbers in growth of wages and GDP do not lie. PPP growth is lagging but this is again due to political corruption (see labour standards in China) and cannot be altered without some sort of aggressive foreign intervention that would surely ruin all other growth trends and foreign investment opportunities. One thing at a time.

We enjoy many inventions, theories and products that are the direct result of the space programs. Do you have any idea where plastics would be without the space programs? Not where they are today. Plastics are pretty useful, in case you didn't know.

Yes, it will. By 2040 goldman sach's predicts that the GDP of China will outstrip that of the UNITED STATES. True, not all developing nations show the same level of growth but you must look at PPP terms which are improving essentially accross the board. Obviously not all countries will be on equal playing fields but even in the "developed world" this is not true. There's no easy and fast solution.

As for the technological gap? Are you serious? This is WHY they are developing. This is primarily where the gains are being made. I am not sure where you are getting these numbers or ideas but I'd like to see them but the economist and harvard business review seems to disagree with your findings.

I'm not sure I entirely know what you mean by the plastics. I fail to see how one body of research usurps all others. For example, the largest cancer research group does not cause all other researchers in the same field to give up. Certainly there are inefficiencies in budgeting but this will always exist, especially in the state controlled system which your points seem to be leaning towards. I, for one, believe that think-tanks such as NASA have very good qualities, especially in terms of research. Generally, things are developed for application in space. However, all research is done for a specific application, not for "greater human good." Even such things as medical research, which seems to be the most idealistically philanthropic, is primarily done by large firms such as Merck. I understand where you are coming from but I disagree.
