I don't really understand how there can be so much hate on this.
It's not like they're putting out a brochure and a magzine... it's just a really cool brochure.
So instead of putting out something that just shows the product, they're putting out a cool magazine thingy that will be interesting.
I mean why hate it? Just get Ski Time and the K2 brochure and you're stoked. At least there will be a few different options out there.
Each magazine will have it's separate focus, and be entertaining in it's own way. Every other sport has a bunch of different mags to choose from, why can't we?
Wow, I can't believe how much hating is going on here?
It seems the most common complaint is that this is likely going to be a K2 product promo instead of a core magazine. But how would that be any different than other magazines? The first 10 pages of Freeskier are ads, along with half the magazine. There are advertisements to offset some of the costs of producing the content. That's just how it goes....
K2's magazine will be the same, but ads will be more K2 centric.
Jib_This, do you honestly believe that this isn't the first attempt to ever hijack a culture?? I don't know if anybody's noticed, but that's how modern marketing works.
Nike doesn't market shoes, fashion companies don't market clothes and core sports companies don't sell sports equipment. They all sell a culture. When did you last see a Nike add that gave information on a specific product. It's always a lifestyle ad with a focus on their brand. Fashion companies don't have ads detailing clothes, they feature models living in their clothes. If anybody thinks that companies don't try to integrate themselves into a culture for marketing purposes, they're fooling themselves. Welcome to marketing.
So if K2 can make a sick mag that has some ads, then how could it be treated any differently than any other magazine out there?
Soooo I was just at my local ski shop looking for Skeeze and they said "No we don't have anything right now except for the Burton Magalogue." So I said "whats that?" and they were like "its a burton catalogue that kind of looks like a magazine" and I was like "huh, skiing is actually on track with snowboarding for once!"
So all you homos should recognize that K2 is innovating way before Armada or any of those other "core" companies.
Some of you are way way off the mark. Specifically the character named Jib_This.
I can go through and answer all of your 'concerns' directly.
Micah Abrams vs. Michael Jaquet? Well, Mike actually sits in and writes an article in the piece and I think it turned out pretty well. In fact, I'm sure you might even enjoy what Micah wrote.
Secondly you said: "No, this just reeks of a ridiculously huge multi-national corporation.."
Actually we are a US based company. All marketing, product development and engineering, prototyping, design and brand direction is done here on an island in Washington.
You continued:
".....using but one tiny part of its many tentacles in a pathetic, misguided, yet potentially succesful attempt to corner a market by taking over it from the grassroots up, the wrong way."
So are you trying to make fun of us, or give praise? Grassroots up? As opposed to just starting from the tip top, right? Hahaha. Those many tentacles you speak of is five of us simple human beings that like to ski, so maybe combined, we could look like a ten armed, five headed hydra. Sorry, I've been playing Wizard Quest for three days straight. Just kidding.
"This isn't about "filling a void", it's about name dropping an old magazine figurehead and a trendy design company in a BLATANT attempt to sell more gear. Why? So K2's stock goes up a quarter of a percent."
No, we really just wanted to make something cooler than a brouchure with a picture and description of our skis, sorry. We appologize for offering something you can actually sit down and read through to get stoked on the upcomming season. Perhaps you could educate yourself further as to how a buisiness runs as well. Claiming corporate conspiracy is getting old. I think I have proven in the past threads, K2's commitment through the years, so there is no legitimacy to that argument. Sorry.
"So Abma's in your catalog/magazine? Does it make you credible?"
Why in the hell would we put a different company's athlete in our catalog? Hahahahahahaha.
"No. It's simple, paying Nemo to do a different piece on someone else was probably deemed an "unjustifiable expense" by the Board of Directors at K2 Sports..."
What do you speak of? Paying NEMO to do something on somebody else? Stupid. Now I'm confused, maybe even more so than when you wrote this rant. Again, a group of five of us lowly beings set forth to create this, nothing to do at any level with a "board of directors." Corporate conspiracy part three!!!
"You know what? It's pathetic. Look at that picture of the "magazine". I see hot pink...really creative and different. I see "graffite style" fonts...wow, elements taken straight from the streets, or your nearest font library... The use of word "ass" is hilarious. I'm not sure if you're trying to be "edgy", but it just comes out as your magazine being juvenile."
Your own opinion, but if you would like to provide an example of a piece of literature you are backing, I can just as easily rip it apart from a design standpoint too. Try me.
"No, make no mistake about it, K2 isn't "filling a void". They're trying to sell more skis. And while it can be said that a legitimate magazine is more or less fluff between ads, this reeks of corporate attempts at hijacking a culture, a sport, and indeed a revolution, from the bottom up."
No, we were really trying to fill a void and make a sick ass catalog. Any brochure can be declared a "manipulation" as it is an aimed vehicle for delivery of a specific message of a brand. When a company has an advertisement, it still is, as you say 'propaganda.' So at that level, absolutely everyone big or small in any industry is guilty of making ads to entice people to try and buy their product. Your argument again holds no weight.
"We know Transworld is filled with ads, and we understand the purpose and the delivery vehicle. This is deliberately designed to manipulate. It is, in fact, corporate propaganda. Nothing less."
Your problem stems from the fact that have not even held this in your hands. You argue against something you don't know about, and this is why you are failing point by point. How does a 'standard' magazine differ from a book/brochure/catalog with stories made by one company? You say you understand Transworld's aim, but ours is simple 'corporate propaganda'? I was think more along the lines of a fun read with great pictures, but again, you haven't seen it
"If others aren't agreeing with K2 then they should make their own".
Exactly Jib_This. We wholeheartedly await your new brochure/catalog with stories/whatever you want to call it.
"You shouldn't fuck with the masses. Because you'll eventually get served a revolution."
No, this is for the masses, and it is a revloution. I also eagerly await seeing SKi Time. That is a step that our industry needs and meanwhile, we are just pushing it ourselves.
sounds like a sick catalog, schmies. I was kind of shocked by the complete absence of props to Ski Time in the press release, though as I was reading it. Kind of a diss. K2 is sick though, if it's good enough for Plake, it's good enough for me. And schmies is cool.
