Hate to say it, but part of the “good old days” that people vent about is when skiing wasn’t prohibitively expensive and overcrowded at the same time like it is today. We really haven’t made skiing better for “everyone.” I don’t believe so in the slightest. Better for the super rich? Absolutely. But a day ticket anywhere you go that has more than 1200 feet of vertical now seems to be like $140 or more. That’s not better for everyone.
Of course you can just “gO ToUrInG!” But a backcountry set up + avalanche gear is going to run you a good $1200 +. Plus the cost and time to gain the knowledge to get out there safely. So yes, I believe being upset about the “old days” having changed is totally warranted, and skiing needs to be made better for everyone, and not just those with the money to spend.

Skiing is orders of magnitude more accessible to the middle class than it was 20 years ago. Of course there's start up costs but that's true for any sport/hobby that involves more than a basketball and a public hoop. Sure day passes were cheaper but season passes were to one location only and weren't cheap. If you get enough days in with the right pass you can ski all over for cheaper cost per day than a burger and beer at your local dive bar.
Yeah nowadays the climates going down the shitter, its overcrowded, more expensive than ever, we never gave natives their land back, I'm still closeted, and the skier population is still whiter than snow.
