I went to Auschwitz last summer and yeah it is very haunting and really makes you think. I just want to clarify to people out there that may not know that Poland is not to blame for what happened there at all! The nazis chose a remote location in a country they invaded to hide their dirty work. A Jewish girl from my class made a joke that she was saying there used to be a lot more Jewish people but you (she was saying in reference to to people from my nationality) killed all of us. That is so historically incorrect and the smut that corrupts some people's mind is incomprehensible. She was referring to one Polish leader that was involved in the killings, well let me tell you this, Jewish people were killing their own people inside of the camps serving as guards too (the Nazis were able to get their own people to turn on themselves making their jobs easier in exchange for slightly less severe treatment). I also suppose she doesn't realize that over a thousand Polish people died (families with kids aged one, two, three even) trying to protect and harbour escaped prisoners (mostly Jewish) from Auschwitz.
Anyways this story was great! A trip to Poland and Europe for that matter is a very worthwhile experience to have in your lifetime so if you are interested in traveling and broadening your culutural horizons I highly recommend it!
Those pancakes are placki ziemniaczanie, aka Polish pancaks! Delicious!!! Didn't realize the ski season was so prominent in Poland, i knew Zakopane is a ski town and I guess the newschooler movement is thriving there!
I really enjoyed this story and sounds like you had a great time Jeff! Thanks for the great story!
