This is the second in a series of opinion pieces which I will be writing over the next few weeks covering numerous skiing related topics. The first article I wrote was "
On the other hand, Canddie Thovex One Of Those Days is the most viral skiing video of all time. And yes, it most likely had more set up and planning than Level One films do. Despite this, I didn't find myself staring at the computer thinking "stop taking skiing so seriously". I didn't think this, because the edit didn't take itself seriously. Yes, the planning and the concept of the edit was extremely serious, however the edit itself let the skiing do the talking. They didn't use slow motion for every shot and didn't put Inception style music to emphasize the skiing. They let the edit flow and be natural. Something other edits need to learn from Candide.
" Skiing is fun, and we have fun skiing by dancing and fooling around. I simply posted this to show people that not everyone out there takes promo vids super serious and not everyone trys to make them over dramatic. My bad if it seemed like i was trying to madd claim my shit or anything, i was just happy with the way it came out and thought i would give more people the opportunity to see it by posting it in SG. I did this in the hopes that more people would learn to make less hardcore/dramatic/intense vids when skiing is actually all about having fun. So basically i'm sorry if it seemed like i was trying to claim my shit, but i was just trying get a point across. Hope somebody out there will make a fun video instead of an intense one, next time the edit"- Tom Wallisch in 2006. In a thread where he may or may not have claimed his skills, however even back then he had a point. That skiing and edits should be fun. And they can be fun and very professional at the same time. Look at the recent Faction Collective videos. They have been some of the most well made, shot and edited edits of the past year. They don't have the ridiculous amounts of editing, slow motion or Inception music in them and because of that they have found the perfect balance between professionalism and self representation through skiing.
If you look at the repost threads of "best edit" a few edits always pop up, because these edits were fun and got you pumped up for skiing. You may of may not have got a boner over the technicality of their tricks, but leave the technical shit to X Game and Dew Tour. Edits should be about having fun and showing your style and it's hard to see your style when every shot is in the slow motion.
Obviously, that list of edits could of gone on for days, but all these edits are Newschoolers favourite edits I have found. And did they over edit and use the most climactic music they could get their hands on? No, they stayed true to themselves and made an edit that represented them and who they were. And for that, they've managed to create the best edits since free skiing started. And it shows with the number of views each video gets.
Maybe its skiers wanting to take themselves more seriously as our sport becomes more mainstream and they'er wanting their edits to appeal to more of a broad spectrum. Maybe they want us to see just how good they are, or maybe it's a movement in the industry to create edits that are out of touch with the general community. Whatever the reason, it's destroying the very nature of what creating an edit is about.
