Stepping onto boxes and rails is a fun trick that is not super steezy in the beginning but when combined with a surface or step on 270 or 450 on it gets pretty cool.
First times you try stepping onto a box, start out from standing still and use the poles for balance. When doing this feel where you want to have the edge of the box. I like to have the edge straight underneath my foot.
The first couple of tries try either a step on to a 5050 or go for a box slide.
After you got the step on down try either a step on to surface. Ski straight towards the box with a tiny amount of wind up. Make sure to lift the nose high enough and step onto the box with the box straight underneath the boot.
Start the rotation and push off from the ski that is still from the snow
Keep the feet much closer together than you would while doing a normal box slide so you can keep both feet on the box. Be careful not to tip over because you will be much less stable having the feet close together but are necessary unless the box is really wide.
Wallie is when you do a mixture of an ollie and hit the edge of the rail or box like a tiny wallride thus the name Wallie.
First times you try this try wallie to 5050. Start out with very little speed to decrease the risk in case your ride into the box with the noses. I think of my wallies mostly like an ollie that uses the edge of the box like a jump. Try to hit the box just in front of your bindings this makes it feel more smooth than if you hit it straight under your feet. Notice that here when I've hit the box my legs are still bent and pushing up.
Make sure to fully ollie so you bring your hip forwards so that you can land perpendicular to the angle of the box.
Jump higher for more style or ad a shifty or why not a sniper tap if you are feeling rad
To add some more style skip using the jump on and try doing an ollie onto the box, rail or tube. Approach the feature almost straight from the side in the beginning. Do a big ollie onto it almost like the wallie. With time you will get a feeling for how much you will need to lean back so you do not just tip over the feature.
Sliding with more style. Many people do the mistake to jump to high onto boxes and rails and land something like the photo. If you slide with a tall stance you get bad balance and control of your slide.
There are two major "stances" you can have when sliding. What they both have in common is that you should stand with slightly wider stance than hip wide, slight shin pressure, knees bent. One way of doing it is to slide with the chest pointing the same direction as the skis and look towards the landing. This way of doing it is good for fast frontside spins out.
The second way to do this is by having your hips pointing the same direction as the skis and the upper body towards the landing. This way of doing it is good for fast backside spins out.
For the second way of sliding it's a good idea to use counter rotation when you jump onto it.
If you minimize how high you jump onto it by pulling your feet up then pushing them down again. You reduce the "risk" of landing with the tall stance as shown earlier.
Try to stand still while on the feature for as long as possible to make it look better.
If you want to slide it with the first way of doing it. Minimize the jump by pulling up and pushing down the skis. Use a bit of rotation onto the box or rail and lock/block the rotation by pressing the front foot's heel down.
Another way to slide with more style can be by learning hand drags. Before hitting a box try sitting down in the snow and feel what it's going to feel like. Have your chest very close to your knees. Try not to put to much weight on the uphill foot but you are likely to end up like me having some more weight on that foot in order to drag the hand. Also, plan which way you want to rotate off it. Grab the back edge for backside rotation and the front edge for frontside rotation out.
Here I am doing a step on 270 hand drag pretzel out. You can see how I am really dragging the hand on the edge to be able to spin the backside 270 out.
To jump off with more style the easiest way to make it look good is by popping hard/high of it and stay relaxed in the air.
Ollies and nollies are a ton of fun and to make a small ollie or nollie where you barely go out on the tails/noses it's not that hard. But if you aim ollie or nollie from "far" out on the tails/noses it gets rather challenging.
To ollies out, slide the rail like normal and about halfway over it press the noses down. This is because you want to move the body pretty much of the rail.
As you are sliding out towards the tails start popping of it but you should attempt to go from a "pop" to an ollie.
Firmly press those tails down on the rail pretty much like a normal ollie. I find this trick to be easier and feel better to do to switch (backside spins).
For the nollie out you do it the same but opposite. Press the heels down to move back off the rail.
Start popping and lean forwards so you take off from the noses. This trick feel better to do to straight (frontside spins)
