So this past weekend was my girlfriends 21st. Things kicked off on Thursday with a casual BBQ and drinks. We planned to go up to Naseby for the weekend to ride bikes and to visit Stellas Dad and rest of family, who were camping up there. First though we were going out to dinner with Stels Mum and partner! We went to a place called Plato. Nicest restaurant ever. They do amazing food but still manage to keep a relaxed vibe. I tried several new things like whitebait fritters and octopus.
Unfortunately I was on call at work for Saturday morning so we couldn’t leave Friday night as planned. We finally got away on Saturday about 2pm. Got up the road to Palmerston and I decided to stop to buy a pie. McGreggors Bakery in Palmerston make amazing pies!
Anyway, it turned out to be a bad decision to stop at plamy because right as we were about to leave a thunderstorm rolled over and there was a massive cloud burst. Since I wanted to get back on the road I decided to be the man and run across the street and get the car so Stel didn’t get soaked too. Holy shit. That rain was bucketing down! I guess the road was about 15m wide and in the time it took me to get across and jump in the car my tshirt and pants were soaked.
The rain continued as we headed inland toward our final destination of Nasbey. It was far from ideal driving conditions so we made pretty slow progress. I’ve never seen so much water pooling on the surface of the road before. It was pretty sketch because the water was pulling the car all over the place.
It cleared as we got nearer to Naseby and we were treated a dope sky with the sun shining through the dark storm clouds. We pitched our tent and got sorted and then went for a 2.5 hour bike ride with Stels Dad and Brother. I took my DH bike with me not realising we were mainly going to be doing XC riding. It was interesting to say the least. Peddling a 20kg lump of metal uphill is tiring - especially when you only have a 38t chain ring up front. Aside from the bad bike choice the riding in Naseby was great. There are heaps of different tracks to take that run along old gold mining water races and through sluicing tailings.
One of the last tracks we rode that night was a gradual downhill singletrack through tight forrest. We were riding this at about 10pm so there was hardly any light left - it was cool zipping through the forrest in the dark.
Sunday morning was pretty cold but we were riding again. This time we did a 4 hour ride.. by this stage I was used to peddling my bike around so it was much more enjoyable, although there were still plenty of steeper parts I had to push up! Stella’s sister came up on Sunday and brought with her an amazing chocolate cake she made earlier in the day. That cake was soo good! After demolishing the cake it was time to leave and head back to Dunedin to face another week at work.
I’ve decided I’m gonna get fitter before the ski season starts. Part of my plan will be biking so I’ve started off today by bringing my bike to work with the intention of stopping at some local trails on the way home. Should be fit in no time (if I can stay motivated haha).
Peace
