Take my advice: Do a backflip on another medium first! Try first off a 1m springboard diving board Then a 3 m diving board. Then instead of doing it facing backwards, run off forwards and do it.. (eg jump forward, yet backflip). Get used to the feeling of rotating, etc.. timing things out...

If your carrying an ice axe, you can use the classical self arrest technique. Easy to do in the backcountry, I always carry one when in the steeps in the outback. If not... your fucked, unless you can get your skiis downhill and somehow stop anyways- or theres flatter to stop.
