it looks like once he starts to slide he's slightly off the rail. this way when he spins around his skis hit the outside of the rail thus allowing him to add another generation to his family

it looks like he learned to do them off the ends of rails, where nutting is less likely since he will just run out of rail before it has time to meet the nuts.
